Family Focused
Pembroke First Baptist’s mission is to minister to the whole family.
And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor 13:13
The cool air and the colorful leaves signal the end of another harvest season. The fruits of the harvest season have been gathered, the vines and branches now become silent, and the earth prepares for the quiet rest of winter. During this time of winter quiescence, the roots are resting, but ready for the opportunity to expand their root systems in search of water and nutrients in advance of spring bud break. The rest and readiness of the roots are vital to the fruit that will bear forth in the next harvest season. The scripture passage illustrates to us the greatest fruit of Christian living is love. Of all the things one can think of or relate to in Christian living “the greatest of these is love.” Love is the natural produce of eternal life in Jesus Christ. The “fruit of the Spirit” begins with love (Gal 5:22). As the seeds of God’s word are sowed in the life of the child of God, the Holy Spirit roots Himself within for the sap of God’s love to rise from the seedling roots to produce fruit that will nurture the starving hearts of man. The fruit of love is of the work of Jesus that He produces through the life and obedience of the child of God. “I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that abides in Me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without Me ye can do nothing” (Jn 15:5). It is the greatest desire of Jesus that His children be “rooted and grounded in love” (Eph 3:17). Dear friend, break the harden soil of your heart and cleanse the things that choke out the roots of God’s word and hinder the sap that flows from His love. Dear friend, does your life seem like it’s going through a winter season? Does coldness surround your life and does unforgiveness, bitterness, loneliness, and pain chill your heart. Do you desire feel the warmth and the sunshine of God’s love? Humble yourself and open your heart to God then you will know that “the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and…contrite spirit” (Ps 34:18). My friend, the total package of the Spirit filled life for the child of God is that “faith, hope, and love” abide within, “but the greatest of these is love.” Jesus promises that “If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you…and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7) and you will know the eternal flow of His love. Father thank You for Your love that abides and flows from Immanuel’s veins. In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.
Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ. Jude 1
The Fall season is a special time of the year. The earth prepares for the cold of winter as we take notice of the colorful leaves that paint the country and hill sides. People begin to dawn their winter coats to preserve themself from the chills in the air. In times past, many homes were filled the smell of fresh apples being cooked, canned and preserved the cold months ahead. The practice of canning and preserving has faded and been replaced by refrigeration and the availability of market items at local groceries. These modern conveniences have opened the way for consumerism so that little thought is given for putting away or preserving for the future. It is something we don’t think about because it’s taken care of by someone else. The scripture passage is a great reminder of the One who keeps us for the change that lies ahead and our future in heaven. The child of God is “preserved in Jesus Christ” for the new season in heaven. The phrase “preserved in Jesus Christ” is also translated “kept for Jesus Christ.” Through faith in Jesus Christ, we are washed by His blood (1 Cor 6:11), cleansed from sin and all unrighteousness, and “sealed for the day of redemption” (Eph 4:30). Jesus, by His own blood, preserves us and keeps us for Himself until the day that we will be with Him and be like Him (1 Jn 3:2). Yet, while we anticipate the new season of His soon return, we are now kept for the season of His harvest. Our spirit is being kept for His Spirit. Our soul is being kept that His mind may transform us. Our heart is being kept as the bowl of a fountain that His love may flow in and out of us. Our body is being kept that He may use our members for the glory of the Father’s will. Dear friend, while we await His soon return, renew your commitment to Jesus as a faithful laborer in His harvest. “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few” (Matt 9:37). Will you answer His call and so labor in the kingdom that you offer yourself “a sweet aroma to the Lord” (Lev 2:2). My friend, we are kept by the blood Jesus, seasoned by His love, and sealed with the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. We are kept for Him and for His good work that “all men…be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim 2:4). Father thank You for Your love, Your mercy, and Your faithfulness to keep all by faith in Jesus Christ. In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matt 6:21
There are things that we deem precious in life. A pristine vintage car. Team championships. Life savings. A home filled with laughter. The smell of a newborn babe. A faithful friend. A devoted spouse. These things may or may not be on your list. Your list of precious things may be totally different. But one thing for sure, there is something you treasure with all your heart. There is something that you live for. The scripture passage remains us that our heart will follow its treasure. It is the most natural marriage and binding relationship ever known to man. The two are inseparable. Jesus declared to His disciples, “where your treasure is, there your heart be also.” Jesus understood the deep desires of the heart and the things we cling to. He understood how one’s heart can become easily troubled, insecure, and unstable. He understood the great lengths that one would go through to secure their heart from trouble and create safety from suffering and pain. That sought after security is the treasure of the heart. Jesus came to redeem the souls of men and secure those hearts with everlasting peace. His eternal promise to the troubled heart is, “let not your heart be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in Me” (Jn 14:1). The heart of man is anxious, continually seeking and searching, burden with troubles, “but a good word maketh it glad” (Prov 12:25). Dear friend, above all things, what is your heart’s greatest desire? What brings you happiness? What is it that you will go to great lengths to secure? The lyrics of the ole’ spiritual hymn “Give me Jesus” were penned to express treasure of the heart. It says “In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus. When I am alone, give me Jesus. When I come to die, give me Jesus.” The great conclusion and treasure of the song writer’s heart was “You can have all this world, just give me Jesus.” My friend, Jesus is the greatest treasure that your heart can ever know. Settle the troubles of your heart and “lay up for yourself treasures in heaven” (Matt 6:19) through faith in Jesus Christ. Father thank You that You know our heart and provide all that is needed through Your Son Jesus. I proclaim with the Apostle Paul, “for to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Phil 1:21). “Just give me Jesus.” In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Gen 3:6
