Desire for Good

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Gen 3:6

I pray that you were blessed to worship as you gathered with the saints of God at your local church on the Lord’s Day. God rejoices the soul that gathers unto Him. What is it that makes you happy? What cheers you and lifts you up? For some it may be their job, a fine home, or even the clothes they wear. For others it may be that they married well, have a good position or prominent status in their community. What is it that brings you real joy? Christians ought to be the happiest people in the world. The scripture passage demonstrates how easily we become distracted, dissatisfied, and desirous for other things. “God created man in His own image” (Gen 1:27) and blessed them with the liberty to enjoy and take pleasure in all that He created. In the beginning, all things were for man to choose and enjoy, with only one exception, God forbid them to eat of “the tree of knowledge of good and evil” (Gen 2:17). Though man can enjoy the pleasures from all the things God has created, yet the satisfaction and contentment for the soul of man can only be in God. “The woman saw the tree was good…pleasant to the eyes, and…to be desired.” In all things that God created “God saw that it was good” (Gen 1:10,12,18,21&25). The woman recognized “that the tree was good for food, and…pleasant” but she was tempted to gain from the tree what God would supply Himself. “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God” (Jam 1:5). You see my friend, there is inherent good in all things created by God, and God is glorified as we recognize the good in His creation and use the good in them according to their created purpose. Temptation presents an opportunity as a way to have and obtain the good of things for pleasure as a means to satisfy our own desires without God. Our desires are real and real satisfaction is found only in God. We are created in the image of God and that includes the desire for His good which “God shall supply…according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phil 4;19). God is rich in mercy (Eph 2:4), full of wisdom (Eze 28:12), kind, good, and “gives to all liberally and without reproach” (Jam 1:5) who come to Him. God takes great pleasure when His children come to Him, and He is always ready and waiting to hear our cries when we are afflicted (Job 34:28). Dear friend, what is it that you desire? Turn to God and make your desires and request known to Him. He is waiting. He is willing. He is worthy of you asking. Father thank You for all the good that You created. I will delight in You that You may give me the desires of my heart (Ps 37:4) and in You, O Lord, I can know the peace that surpasses all understanding. In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.
