Alone With the Father

“When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret.” (Matt 6:6)
A CapitalOne commercial advertisement asks, “What’s in your wallet?” The ad speaks to the buying power for one who possesses this certain credit card. The possessor of the card has a capacity for all their needs and purchasing power unimaginable. The advertiser’s claim “it is the only card that you will ever need.” The same can be said about the power and presence of God. For the soul filled by the presence of God and strengthened with His power, God is all we ever need. The place where the child of God comes to know the infinite power and intimate presence of God is in their secret place through the power of prayer. Our scripture passage leads us to consider that God might be asking “Who’s in your closet?” The closets in our home are places where we store personal items. A secret closet is the spiritual place where the child of God can take their personal issues, private concerns and pressing matters to their heavenly Father who listens and lovingly answers “according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19). The secret place is an “alone-time” with God to “shut thy door” to the demands and distractions of the world outside, get away from the busyness of day-by-day striving, searching, and seeking, to recline in the arms of your Father who desires your presence more than you could ever imagine. The secret closet is a safe place where the child of God comes to openly and honestly “pray to thy Father which is in secret,” commune with their Father, and receive His cleansing, His forgiveness and be restored into His fellowship to become radiant with His abounding presence. My friend, there is no greater invitation and no greater use of time than to “enter into thy closet, and…pray to thy Father which is in secret.” Today, God is calling all His children to “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning” (Joel 2:12). He sincerely desires that all would come to know “Who is in your closet.” I imagine that it was the secret closet where the song writer learned to sing and proclaim to the world “Jesus is all the world to me, my life, my joy, my all…He’s my Friend.” Thank You Father for Your invitation and desire to meet with Your children alone and in secret. Help me to shut the door to the world and be alone with You, learn of You, and lean on You. In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.

Light of Life

“Ye are the light of the world…Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matt 5:14-16

Have you ever looked up into the sky to see the sun shining brightly and say to yourself “It’s a good day? I will rejoice and be glad in it.” The sun is the natural light to the earth and without the sun, no life on earth can exist. Light represents life. Light means life for natural things and life for the spirit of man. The scripture passage reminds us that the children of God “are the light of the world.” The Church is the light of the world, and we are lamps placed within the Church. A lamp is filled with oil to receive light that the house may be filled with light. The natural man is an empty lamp pot. He lays broken in complete darkness and does not have life. It is only when “the light of life” (Jn 8:12) shines into the darkness and warms the cold, dark, hardened clay in the hearts of men that life can begin and they are “made whole” (Mt 15:31). Jesus proclaimed, “I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12). My friend, your walk of faith is “the light of life.” Knowledge and obedience to the word of God is “the light of the world.” Friend, “let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify our Father which is in heaven.” Father, You are glorified in Your Son and today, be glorified in His child. In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.

Salt of the Earth

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.” Matt 5:13

At an early age I learned enjoyed the taste of salt on watermelon. It only takes a little bit of salt, but what a difference it makes. The flavor of the melon explodes with delight at every bite. Salt makes a world of difference. Our scripture passage teaches us that Christians “are the salt of the earth.” The child of God has received within themselves the salt of the gospel. Just as a pinch of salt disperses its taste in food and enhance its flavor, the salt of the gospel penetrates and permeates the hearts of men. The salt of the gospel cleanses the soul and preserves the soul from spiritual decay. It is an everlasting covenant between God and those who truly believe. The life of the believer is forever changed by the salt of the gospel and receiving the indwelling Holy Spirit through salvation in Jesus Christ.  That change is evident to the world. The fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22) is enhanced as the believer’s life transformed and flavored with the hope of the gospel (Col 1:23), joy inexpressible (1 Pet 1:8), peace that surpasses all understanding (Phil 4:7), and rest for the weary soul (Mt 11:29). The world is seasoned with the message of eternal life and eternal hope through faith in Jesus Christ. Salt is what the world needs. Christians are called to be salt of the whole earth, follow the last words of Jesus when He said “Go…make disciples of all the nations…teaching them” (Mt 28:19). The salt of the gospel is refreshed in the life of the believer and new salt is replenished as it is shared and seasoned to the world. My friend, “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Ps 34:8) and with your whole life, season the whole world with the whole message of the gospel. Do not allow your salt to become street trash. Be refreshed in the word of God. Be renewed in His mercy. Be replenished with power by His Holy Spirit. My friend, walk in a manner that pleases God and live in a manner that glorifies His Name. Go and salt the world. The world needs the salt of our Lord and Savior. In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.
