Escape Temptation

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 1 Cor 10:13

Do temptations still target you? Despite how you might wish to respond, the most likely answer is yes. A better question might be, “How big of a target are you carrying for the triggers of temptation?” Temptation in its purest form is a lie disguised as a promise of fulfillment or a cheap way for satisfaction. It triggers the idea in our mind that, “If you do this, then you will feel satisfied.” Thoughts such as, “If you keep eating, then you will be satisfied.” Or “If you look at these images, then you will be satisfied.” Or whatever the trigger maybe to fulfill a void, lack, or need, this will satisfy. Moments like these are just big targets on your life. These are mere opportunities for the enemy to distract you from the truth, to fall into sin. You are left unfulfilled and unsatisfied, deeper in the passion of sin. The scripture passage teaches us that that temptation “is common to man.” Everyone suffers temptation and a passion for sin (Rom 3:23). Yet the good news is that God provides “a way to escape” from the lure of temptation and the power to resist the passion stirred by temptation “that ye may be able to bear it.” My friend, “God is faithful” to deliver His children when temptation appears, entices our passion, and appeases our desire. He provides a way to escape through faith in His word and alert by the Holy Spirit. Jesus resisted the temptations of the devil through His knowledge and faith in the word of God (Lk 4:1-13). The patriarch Joseph, when he was alienated, alone, and abandoned, resisted temptation to appease for a moment of passion and worldly desire. Resisting temptation enables the child of God to know and enjoy the goodness of God. Joseph was able to say to his brothers, “ye thought evil against me, but God meant it unto good” (Gen 50:20). God knows that His children are targets for temptation by the enemy, “but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able.” Dear friend, when you are the target of temptation trust the truth of God’s word as the source of satisfaction. Anything outside of Him will leave you unfulfilled and unsatisfied. Also know that with every temptation there is a way out. “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (Jas 4:7). Turn to God and He will help you fight. We all have triggers for immediate satisfaction, but God reminds us that He is the Source of everlasting fulfillment. Even when we fall to temptation, God ‘s way of escape is to confess our sin to Him and to one another, that our beloved friends may pray for our healing to overcome sin’s temptation (Jas 5:16). Thank God for dear Christian friends. Father, thank You for Your love, Your mercy and compassion to keep me out of the grip of sin. Thank You for Your faithfulness to strengthen and sustain me in the face of any temptation that I may face. In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.

Perfect Peace

But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name. Jn 1:12

I pray that you had a wonderful day of worship with your local church on the Lord’s Day. Have you heard the saying, “Get busy and get busy doing something?” I believe we all battle that type of urge from time to time. It’s an urge tells us that things are not as good as they can be. It seems to come from a sense that things are not perfect, nor complete, or that something can be improved upon. When that line of thinking is allowed to creep into our spirit, we become unsettled, distracted, and dissatisfied. The peace and rest that is given has yet to be fully realized. The scripture passage reminds us that God has settled all our sin account through Jesus “to become sons of God.” That is a message for every child of God. God loves you and gave His Son for you (Jn 3:16) that you might know Him as His beloved child (Jn 17:3). Have you accepted God’s love completely or do you find yourself trying to gain God’s greater approval? When Jesus declared on the cross “It is finished” (Jn 19:30), God’s plan of salvation, His forgiveness of sin, and His eternal love were made perfectly perfect and completely complete for all “that believe on His Name.” God’s not looking at what we can do, He’s looking at who we are in Him. Everything outside of the finished work of Jesus is nothing. Everyone who starts at the foot of the cross, empty handed, “them gave He power to become sons of God.” The child of God is sealed with His guarantee, filled with His Spirit, and given “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding” (Phil 4:7) to know and enjoy the true purpose He has for His children. That true purpose is to know Him, to worship Him, and work with Him, not work for Him. He desires to work in you and through you (Phil 2:13). Dear friend, stop striving and doing in your own strength that pleases you, but receive Him and His power that you may rest in His grace. Actively wait where God is working. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Ps 46:10). Actively waiting is to actively engage, while being sensitive and led by the Holy Spirit. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God” (Eph 2:8). Father thank You for Your love and the finished work of Jesus Christ. Remind me to rest and rely completely in Him. In the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.

Rejoice, His Mercies Are New

This is the day which the LORD hath made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. Ps 118:24

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I say rejoice! (Phil 4:4). God’s mercies never grow old. His heart never darkens, nor turns cold. His mercies never run out, run dry, nor fade. Every morning, the mercies of our Lord are new. His mercies are perfectly sufficient for whatever challenges, disappointments, sufferings, temptations, and struggles that we may face from the sins within us and that surround us. My friend “this is the day the Lord has made, rejoice and be glad in it.” No matter the road you may travel or what may come your way, you can “Rejoice in the Lord” through faith in His promised word that “my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:19). As you begin this day, take a moment to rest, reflect, and meditate on the loving kindness that He has shown you. Be reminded my friend that God promises to “never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb 13:5) and that “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20). By His mercies He strengthens you and gives you courage to abide in Him to move forward in each new day. Yesterday is behind you and today is new. So “rejoice and be glad in it.” Dear friend, sing and shout praises unto the Lord, for His mercies are new every morning. Proclaim the truths of the ole spiritual hymn and sing “Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand have provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!” Father thank You for Your love and Your new mercies every morning. I will rejoice and be glad in this day, for You are my Maker, my Creator, my Lord and my God. I will tell of Your righteousness and Your salvation all the day (Ps 71:15). I thank You and praise You in the blessed Name of Jesus. Amen.
